Miguel

I was out of practice after missing two sessions.
I did four drawings of Miguel. This is the only one that was semi-decent. It's in pastel and colored pencil on watercolor paper treated with sauce.

  1. I like this. He has a very reserved, tough-guy aura that you captured. I hope I do as well.
    What is "sauce"?

  2. Thanks, Betsy! Sauce is a product for changing the color and texture of paper. It looks and feels a little like a pastel stick, but comes in neutral colors. You dampen your paper and scrape the sauce stick on a piece of sandpaper, so the powder falls on the moist paper. Then you use a ratty brush to smear the sauce around. It liquifies in the water and then dries to create a nice, textural background. Sauce is made by the Yarka company--see http://www.dickblick.com/products/yarka-assorted-sauce-classic-drawing-crayons/

  3. Thanks! I have been gesso-ing with pastel ground, which takes up space in my studio while it dries. A bit messy.
