Xavier posed for our painting group in one evening. The character of the sitter, the tattoo on his arm, the black and white stripes on the T-shirt and the still life on the table made it interesting to paint. This was done on a 18" x 24" canvas with acrylic.   Philip Ng

Iris Sabre sent this painting done during the recent session that coincided with the North Shattuck Wine and Food Festival. We had 5 painters who were all very good sports and kept painting even though the room was filled with people who stopped by to taste wine.    Iris said, " I went to my happy place while painting Randall during the wine-tasting last week. With 100 plus people in the room drinking Kombucha the intensity of his focus was matched only by my own."

Portrait Study

Larry did a sitting pose for us. He was reading a book. It was challenging for me since his head moved a little bid from time to time after each rest break. I tried to block in loosely all features and color and tied everything together in the last sitting session. It was a difficult pose for Larry, but it was fun to paint. This is an acrylic on 16" X 20" canvas.

Terry maintain this arch, contented expression, humming along with the music as he posed. He said this painting is "almost a good-morning".

I love painting at the Firehouse in the mornings.  Besides feeling fresh, one gets two sessions to work with the same model.  Mark was a great model, although it was his first time modeling!  In this painting, all of the items were there except I made the vase and flower taller, so as to break the wall horizontal line, and I added a red scarf on the chair.  The intention was to create a narrative picture... The viewer makes the story.  This piece is still  in process, but I think it is still worth playing with.

Wendell Models at the Firehouse

Wendell was fun to paint with his strong features and proud bearing. His jewelry was also very interesting.

The Graffiti Artist

Drew is a great model.  He is different from the usual pretty face with his strong features and wiggy hair.  He kept a difficult pose, looking upward, which I'm sure was hard on his eyes.

The Accidental Male Model

It happened one evening we did not have a model. A gentleman walked into the shop and offered to sit for us. What a happy fit!  He did a good job! This is a painting of him. I did it with acrylic on a 18"x24" canvas.

Christopher

Christopher posed 2 sessions for us. I did several sketches of him in pencil and one in charcoal. Here are two of them that I did with pencil. I used the 2H, HB and 4B graphite pencils on acid-free sketch paper.   The sizes were 11"x 14".

Looking Outside

Working at the Firehouse is interesting because it is a somewhat public space and people look in and watch us at times. So I worked on a composition that focused a little more on the outside. It is a 20 by 28 acrylic.

Jennings Models at the Firehouse

I did the portrait study of Jennings in one session.  It happended there was a white wall background behind the model this time.  I painted the portrait loosely and with bold brush strokes.  It was an oil on a 11" x 14" canvas panel.    Philip Ng

Alexander Models

This one of Alexander uses a lot of texture and came together just at the end when I was able to de emphasize the background.  It is an 18 by 24 acrylic.

I asked the model to choose his ourfit and he came in cowboy gear  and set up a scene with a card game.  He even had some country and western music to play.     We had a small group so I was able to put the model in the center of the room and get a back view. The canvas is 18 by 24.  Karen

Aurora at the Firehouse

I did two paintings of Aurora. One of her alone and one in the series with the painters and the model. Although a few people had problems with her moving in her pose it did not bother me. She had a presence I liked. I usually don't pin down the exact shapes of the figure until very close to the end so I am not bothered much by changes in the pose. Both are acrylic on canvas.

Adrian and Diana at the Firehouse

I worked on this since we painted Adrian trying to develop a unified feeling and story of the model and the painter.

Today I had a yen to draw, not paint. So I was able to do three portraits of Adrian.

The first one, in charcoal, is the best. The second one, in bright colors, gave me a chance to go crazy with oil pastels. It was fun, but the results are only so-so. The third, in pastels, sanguine conte, and pencil, came out okay.

(I don't understand how this blogging program orders the pictures! The first one I posted, the charcoal drawing, came out last when published.)
