Sonia at the Second Firehouse Session

I used an underpainting with this version of Sonia. It let me get to an almost finished place quickly but then I kept working and had to undue a lot of things. The end result has many things I like however in the brushwork. It is a 20 by 20 acrylic. Karen

India Ink on Paper

I had a hectic morning, had to leave early, and could not carry all of my paints where I was going, so I did studies of the people around me. The drawing paper was 12 x 9." I used bamboo pens, metal quills, a Faber-Castell india ink pen, and a small brush to do the figures. Of all of them, the only one I am not happy with is the one of Sonia the model, and only because I was not warmed up. Thanks to Ann Gordon who posed for five minutes and helped us warm up until Sonia came.

The only place left to set up was a profile I new would be difficult. I liked the pose the tension in the position as she looked into the room. It wasn't until I took out more detail from her face that it started to work. I may do some more work in the studio because I can't be there next week. It is an 20 by 24 acrylic on canvas.

Bob's In The Dark

After the Firehouse received a dark new coat of paint, it felt like a cave. I decided that since I could not see his face that clearly, that I would make the street the center of attention. I finished this 20 x 20" rather quickly because I did not have a lot of anatomy to deal with.

I had a hard time with Bob. The first one I did I painted out later. This time the light was drastically different because the room had been painted a too dark color and the lights have not been installed. However the moody feel allowed me a different approach and it is a little better than the last one. It is a 24 by 24 acrylic. Karen

I went into this painting session determined to do something very different from my usual drill--maybe some weird distortions or stylizations. But no, the painting ended up just like all my others (sigh). It isn't finished, needing further work on the
eyes, arm, and all background fabrics.

Edna in the Light

This is the second piece I did with Edna as the model. This one looks better from a distance where the figure emerges slowly from the background. I felt I got the groove almost at the end of the 3 hour session and if I had more energy could have developed it more. It is a 20 by 24 acrylic. Karen
